ElderKiser,
Loveyou and am sure glad that you are serving in Morgan City!! I have beenreading a lot about the Atchafalaya River Basin and the Mississippi recentlyand the effect that the opening of the Morganza flood way will have on MorganCity and the surrounding area. Why is Morgan City in the news and notBerwick. Is Berwick built on a knoll and is it on higher ground? I cannotunderstand why Berwick is not expected flood and Morgan City is? Iunderstand that Berwick also has levees, I just do not understand why this cityis safer than Morgan City.
Iunderstand that the crest of the river is now expected to be about 9 feetright now which is well below the 22 foot Levees that have been built toprotect Morgan City. They also are reporting that more of the floodgateson the Morganza could be opened increasing the crest on the Atchafalaya. These levees were built after the 1927 and the 1973 floods and have neverbeen tested before. Well in another two days we will all know howmuch water will come down and if the 22’ levees will hold out the waterfrom the Atchafalaya and if the back side of the city will be protected. It looks like a lot has been done and is being done to try and protect thecity. I am guessing that you have had an opportunity to fill sand bagsand help try and protect some of the homes in and out of the city.
Ihave looked at some of the Pictures of Butte LaRose and it looks like it willtake a beating. Maybe as much as 22’ of water will go through thatcommunity. I hope that the fishing camps that you have visited are goingto be safe and dry. I guessing that most are going to get flooded though.
Onceagain, stay as dry as you can, be aware of water moccasins and other creaturesas they seek dry ground and try to find new homes from the flood. You areawesome and we sure love you. If the levees hold, you may not see thedamage I expected in the last email that I wrote. I deposited anadditional $200 in your account. With the IRS tax refund you have justover $500 in your account.
